We went to the KZ Ebensee today. In Ebensee, a satellite camp
of Mauthausen, Nazi prisoners built the secret V2 rocket in tunnels dug into
the living rock. Due to the inhumane working and living conditions, Ebensee was
one of the worst Nazi concentration camps for the death rates of its prisoners.
This is one of the mass graves and the watch tower.
More than 3000 prisoners are buried here but over 8000 people died here between 1943 and 1945.
One of the tunnels,
The old gate is on the side to the tunnel.
The actual gate is still in the original spot,
but what I found awful is the fact that in 1948 the town of Ebensee built a settlement on the terrain of the camp. The gate to the camp here is surrounded by lovely little houses. The entrance to the memorial is located in a maze of houses and visitors have a hard time finding it.
It seems clear that the local people don't want to be reminded of the place's history.
